Understand the fundamental principles, components, and types of electric machines.

Basic operating principles of motors and generators; identification of key components (stator, rotor, housing, bearings, shaft); differences between AC induction, permanent magnet synchronous, and DC machines; common applications (automotive traction, industrial, consumer).

Understand the core processes for stator and rotor manufacturing.

Stator lamination manufacturing (punching, stacking, welding/bonding); rotor construction (lamination stack, shaft attachment, magnet insertion for PM rotors); insulation techniques (slot liners, impregnation).

Understand the techniques for winding, insertion, and connection of coils.

Winding types (concentric, lap, wave); introduction to hairpin vs. round wire winding; processes for coil insertion, forming, and connection (welding, bussing); terminal and lead attachment.

Understand the assembly, balancing, and mechanical finishing of electric machines.

Rotor balancing (static and dynamic); bearing selection and installation; endplate and housing assembly; sealing and painting processes; final mechanical assembly procedures.

Understand the key testing, quality standards, and fault diagnosis for electric machines.

In-process checks (resistance, insulation, hi-pot testing); final performance testing (no-load, locked rotor, vibration, noise); introduction to quality standards (e.g., IP ratings); common failure modes and their root causes.

Understand the handling, safety, and material flow considerations specific to electric machine production.

Material flow of laminations, magnets, copper wire and housings; safe handling of heavy components and magnets; use of lift assists and tooling; workplace organisation (5S) in a high-volume production environment.

Electrical Machines & Power Electronics ✅ Full

On this module you’ll explore AC and DC machines in greater depth, focusing on the role of an application engineer and basic principles, characteristics, modelling, control and applications.

You’ll explore two types of motors:

induction machines, which account for more than 90 per cent of the motors used in industry synchronous machines, which are used in some high-efficiency industrial drives, and for most electrical power generation. In many applications, the conventional AC and DC machines are combined with electronic power converters to form electrical drive systems.

You’ll also be introduced to basic concepts of power electronics. You’ll the main types of converter used for these applications, and how they are used together with electrical machines as part of electrical drive systems.

These topics have an increasing relevance in high-technology products that have been developed recently with numerous applications, including: electric cars, hybrid cars, wind power generation, robotics, ship propulsion, micro-grids.
